What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a federal government program designed to help eligible Canadian residents access dental care by reducing the cost of covered oral health services.
Administered by Sun Life on behalf of the Government of Canada, the CDCP helps eligible individuals and families who do not have access to private dental insurance.
The plan covers a range of preventive, diagnostic, and treatment services, subject to its eligibility rules, coverage limits, established fees, and clinical requirements.

What Dental Services Does the CDCP Cover?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan covers a range of dental services when they meet the plan's requirements. Coverage depends on the procedure, clinical circumstances, applicable frequency limits, and whether preauthorization is required.
Preventive and Diagnostic Dental Services
Preventive care helps maintain oral health and identify dental concerns early. Eligible services may include:
- Dental examinations
- Dental X-rays
- Professional teeth cleaning and scaling
- Fluoride treatments
- Dental sealants, when eligible
Routine examinations and professional cleaning can help identify cavities, gum disease, and other oral health concerns before they become more complex.
Basic Restorative Dental Treatments
Depending on your coverage and clinical needs, the CDCP may cover eligible basic treatments, including:
- Tooth-coloured or other eligible dental fillings
- Treatment for tooth decay
- Certain procedures to relieve dental pain
- Eligible root canal treatments
- Certain periodontal treatments for gum disease
Your dentist will assess your oral health and explain the recommended treatment options.
Dental Extractions and Oral Surgery
Some oral surgery services may be covered under the CDCP when they meet the plan's criteria. Eligible services may include:
- Tooth extractions
- Surgical removal of certain teeth or roots
- Treatment of certain oral conditions requiring surgery
- Other eligible oral surgical procedures
Coverage depends on the procedure and the plan's requirements. Some services require preauthorization before treatment.
Dentures and Major Restorative Services
The CDCP may cover certain dentures and major restorative procedures, including eligible complete or partial dentures, denture repairs, and selected crown-related treatments.
Some treatments require preauthorization and must meet specific clinical criteria. Coverage should be confirmed before proceeding.
Important: Not every dental procedure is covered, and the CDCP does not currently cover orthodontic services. Invisalign and other orthodontic treatments should not be assumed to qualify for CDCP coverage.

Not necessarily. The CDCP helps cover eligible dental services, but some patients have co-payments or additional charges. You may also have costs for services that are not covered by the plan or amounts above the established CDCP fees.
Eligible preventive services include professional dental cleaning and scaling. Coverage is subject to the plan's frequency limits, applicable fees, and clinical requirements.
Eligible fillings may be covered under the CDCP. The amount covered depends on the procedure, your benefit level, and the plan's applicable rules.
Dental implant treatment should not be assumed to be covered. The CDCP has specific rules for eligible procedures, and implant-related services may fall outside its coverage. Ask your dental provider to verify the applicable benefit rules before proceeding.
No. Orthodontic services are currently not available under the CDCP. Invisalign and other orthodontic treatments are therefore not covered by the plan.
You can visit a dentist without CDCP coverage, but you should not assume the plan will pay for treatment before your benefits become active. Confirm your benefit start date and coverage before booking treatment intended to be billed to the CDCP.
Yes. CDCP members must renew their coverage according to the program's renewal requirements and confirm that they remain eligible. Check your current benefit period before your appointment.
